For many buyers, the EV conversation still revolves around a crucial question: what’s practical, accessible, and tailored to daily use? To put out the fire, here are two of the most talked-about entry-level electric cars — the MG Comet EV and the Tata Tiago EV. Both models have received updates for 2025, enhancing their appeal to a broader audience.
One offers simplicity and ultra-compact city manoeuvrability. The other brings traditional hatchback practicality with a touch of electric sophistication. But when the novelty wears off, which one stands taller as a long-term EV companion? Let’s break it down.
Pricing and Value Proposition: The MG Comet EV maintains its position as one of the most affordable electric cars in India, with prices ranging from ₹4.99 lakh to ₹7.8 lakh (ex-showroom), with BaaS option, allowing customers to purchase the vehicle separately and subscribe to the battery for a cost of ₹2.5/km, reducing the upfront cost. The same will cost around ₹7 lakh to ₹9.81 lakh (ex-showroom) without the BaaS option.
In contrast, the Tata Tiago EV is priced between ₹7.99 lakh and ₹11.14 lakh (ex-showroom), reflecting its larger size, more powerful motor options, and additional features. While it commands a premium over the Comet EV, the Tiago EV offers more versatility for those seeking a comprehensive electric hatchback experience.
Dimensions and Design: The MG Comet EV is designed with urban mobility in mind. Its compact dimensions—measuring 2,974 mm in length, 1,505 mm in width, and 1,640mm (+104 mm) height—make it exceptionally manoeuvrable in tight city spaces. However, this compactness comes at the expense of interior space. Comet has a wheelbase of 2,010 mm, which offers limited room for rear passengers.
On the other hand, the Tata Tiago EV boasts a length of 3,769 mm and a width of 1,677 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,400 mm (+390 mm), providing a more spacious cabin and better comfort for all occupants. Its conventional hatchback design ensures practicality for both city commutes and occasional highway journeys.
Features and Technology: Both EVs come equipped with a suite of modern features, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and electronic stability control.
The Tata Tiago EV, however, ups the ante with additional amenities such as automatic climate control, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, and a rear wiper with washer. These enhancements contribute to a more comfortable and convenient driving experience, especially for those who frequently undertake longer journeys.
Performance and Range: Under the hood, the MG Comet EV is powered by a 17.3 kWh battery pack paired with a Rear-wheel Drive (RWD) electric motor that produces 42 PS of power out, delivering a claimed range of 230 km. It’s tailored for short city commutes and excels in urban environments.
The Tata Tiago EV is a Front-wheel drive (FWD) car and comes with two battery options: a 19.2 kWh pack with a 61 PS motor and a 24 kWh pack with a 75 PS motor. These configurations provide ranges of 223 km and 293 km, respectively. Additionally, the Tiago EV supports DC fast charging, enabling a 10 to 80 percent charge in just 58 minutes—a feature absent in the Comet EV, which relies solely on home charging solutions.
Final Verdict: The 2025 MG Comet EV is ideal for buyers with a focused urban use case — think short commutes, tight parking spots, and minimal highway use. It’s affordable, easy to live with, and distinctly modern in character.
Conversely, if you seek a more versatile electric vehicle with extended range, faster charging capabilities, and a richer feature set, the Tata Tiago EV justifies its higher price point. It’s well-suited for those who desire the flexibility to venture beyond city limits without compromising on comfort or convenience.
