Originally designed by Dante Giacosa, the Fiat 500 was created to be a small, affordable car for everyday people. It quickly became a symbol of post-war recovery and modern Italy. Its compact design, clever engineering, and distinct personality made it an instant classic. As highlighted in the anniversary film “Buon Compleanno 500!”, the Fiat 500 remains so iconic that it is instantly recognisable, even without any logo, name, or branding.
A Journey Through Three Generations:
Over the past 67 years, the Fiat 500 has evolved through three unique generations, each with its own character:
- First Generation (1957): The original model offered freedom and mobility to a recovering Europe, becoming a cultural icon and a symbol of mass motorisation.
- Second Generation (2007): Relaunched with a modern twist, this version brought style, charm, and a fashion-forward image to city cars worldwide.
- Third Generation (2020): The 500e marked Fiat’s entry into electric mobility, combining iconic design with advanced electric technology, setting a new benchmark for sustainable urban driving.
With more than 7.5 million units sold globally, the Fiat 500 has earned its place as a beloved nameplate. Its success lies in how it continues to evolve while staying true to its original character, playful, stylish, and truly Italian. Special editions released over the years have added to its charm and cultural importance.
Fiat’s legacy continues with the upcoming Fiat 500 Ibrida, a hybrid version set to launch between late 2025 and early 2026. Like the 500e, it will be produced at the historic Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy. The 500e, already a global success, is sold in 48 countries and has led the BEV A-segment in Europe since its debut. In fact, 4 out of every 10 electric city cars sold in Europe are Fiat 500e models. It has also won 43 international awards across 10 countries.
