Volkswagen India has officially reached a significant production milestone with the commencement of local assembly for the all-new Tayron R-Line. Assembled at the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant in Maharashtra, the Tayron is slated for a market launch within the first quarter of 2026.

Positioned as the brand’s new flagship SUV in India, the Tayron R-Line replaces the Tiguan Allspace and occupies the premium three-row segment above the Tiguan R-Line.

Engineering and Powertrain

The India-spec Tayron R-Line is built on the Volkswagen Group’s evolved MQB EVO architecture. In line with the brand’s strategy for the Indian market, it utilizes a petrol-only powertrain.

  • Engine: 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TSI EVO turbo-petrol.
  • Performance: Expected output of 204 hp and 320 Nm of torque.
  • Transmission: 7-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DSG).
  • Drivetrain: Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system as standard.

The transition to local assembly via Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits represents a strategic shift from the fully imported (CBU) route taken by the Tiguan Allspace, potentially allowing for more competitive pricing in the ₹45 lakh to ₹50 lakh bracket.

Dimensions and Practicality

The Tayron R-Line offers a significant increase in footprint over the five-seater Tiguan. With a length of approximately 4,792 mm and an extended wheelbase of 2,789 mm, the SUV accommodates a seven-seat configuration.

Practicality remains a core focus; with the third row folded, the Tayron provides up to 850 litres of boot space, making it one of the most spacious offerings in its class.

R-Line Aesthetics and Features

As the flagship “R-Line” model, the SUV features a sportier design language, including aggressive bumpers, 19-inch alloy wheels, and fender-mounted R-Line badging.

Interior & Technology Highlights:

  • Interface: A driver-focused 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital cockpit.
  • Comfort: Front seats equipped with ventilation and massage functions, a localisation effort replacing the seat heating found in European specs.
  • Convenience: A panoramic sunroof, 30-colour ambient lighting, and multi-zone climate control.
  • Lighting: Full-width LED light signatures and illuminated Volkswagen logos at both the front and rear.

Safety and Market Positioning

The Tayron R-Line has secured a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. The Indian model will be equipped with Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), nine airbags, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard.

Upon its launch in Q1 2026, the Tayron R-Line will compete directly with the Skoda Kodiaq, Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, and Jeep Meridian.
