The Ford Explorer remains a cornerstone of the full-size SUV segment, embodying a “statement on wheels” philosophy that prioritises road presence and family practicality. Following a significant mid-cycle refresh in 2025, the 2026 model continues to leverage its rear-wheel-drive biased architecture and a tech-forward interior to maintain its position as a versatile family haulier.

Performance: Turbocharged Versatility

The 2026 Explorer is built on a platform designed to balance agile handling with confident towing capabilities. Ford offers two primary EcoBoost powertrains tailored for different performance needs:

The standard 10-speed automatic transmission is tuned for refinement, offering smooth shifts during urban commutes while remaining responsive under heavy load. Every model now comes standard with a Class III Trailer Tow Package, reinforcing its utility credentials.

Interior & Tech: The Ford Digital Experience

The cabin has been redesigned to maximize both perceived and actual space. The dashboard is pushed forward to open up the front-seat area, featuring high-quality soft-touch materials even in lower trims.

  • Infotainment: A standard 13.2-inch touchscreen runs the new “Ford Digital Experience,” a Google-based system with native Google Maps and Assistant.
  • Driver Display: A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster allows for full map replication, keeping navigation data directly in the driver’s line of sight.
  • Versatility: The three-row configuration accommodates six or seven passengers. Cargo capacity is a highlight, offering 461.5 litres behind the third row and expanding to 2429.5 litres with all rear seats folded flat.

Dynamics and Handling

Despite its commanding footprint, the Explorer utilises a Terrain Management System with up to seven selectable drive modes, including Normal, Eco, Sport, Tow/Haul, Slippery, Trail, and Deep Snow/Sand. The steering is calibrated to be light at low speeds for easier city manoeuvring, while the suspension setup, including a sport-tuned version on the ST trim, provides stability and reduced body roll at highway speeds.

Safety Standards

The 2026 Explorer is equipped with Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ as standard across all trims. Key safety features include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go.
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross-Traffic Alert and Trailer Coverage.
  • Lane Keeping System and Evasive Steering Assist.
  • BlueCruise: Available hands-free highway driving technology for pre-mapped divided highways.
