Kia has announced specifications for the upcoming Carens and Carens Clavis CNG models, marking the company’s entry into the factory-fitted CNG passenger vehicle segment in India. Prices are expected by the end of September or early October.

Engine and efficiency

Both MPVs will use a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with a factory-fitted CNG system.

  • Power: 93hp
  • Torque: 123Nm
  • Estimated fuel efficiency: 22-25km/kg
  • CNG tank capacity: 60 litres

In CNG mode, the engine produces 22hp and 21Nm less than its petrol-powered counterpart.

Changes for the CNG models

The 60-litre CNG tank is positioned under the boot floor.

  • Boot space: 116 litres
  • Petrol models offer 216 litres of boot space
  • Suspension has been retuned for the additional weight
  • Front disc brakes have been upgraded
  • The underbody-mounted spare wheel has been retained
  • Both models get 16-inch wheels

Variants

The CNG option will be available on lower variants.

  • Carens Clavis CNG: HTE and HTE (O)
  • Carens CNG: Premium trim

The older Carens was previously available with a CNG option as a dealer-fitted kit, while the upcoming version will receive a factory-fitted system.

Launch timeline

Kia is expected to announce prices for the Carens and Carens Clavis CNG by the end of September or early October.

The Carens and Carens Clavis CNG will bring Kia into India’s factory-fitted CNG segment with a 93hp 1.5-litre engine, a 60-litre CNG tank and an estimated efficiency of 22-25km/kg. The CNG versions will also receive mechanical changes to accommodate the additional tank weight.
