General Motors has confirmed an all-new 8.3-litre Duramax turbo-diesel V8, reportedly nicknamed ‘Mongoose’, for its heavy-duty pickup trucks. The new engine is expected to power the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, with GM targeting Ford’s 6.7-litre Power Stroke diesel.

The announcement marks the first time a Duramax pickup engine will exceed 6.6 litres, a displacement the family has retained since its debut in 2000. However, GM has yet to reveal power figures, specifications or whether the new engine will replace or sit alongside the existing 6.6-litre unit.

8.3-Litre Duramax: What We Know

GM has confirmed the engine’s displacement and V8 configuration, but details remain under wraps.

The ‘Mongoose’ nickname appears in GM’s teaser, which depicts the engine taking on a scorpion, a reference to Ford’s 6.7-litre Power Stroke, often associated with the same nickname.

To surpass Ford’s high-output diesel, the new Duramax will need to exceed 500 hp and 1,627 Nm of torque. For context, Ram’s 6.7-litre Cummins inline-six produces 430 hp and 1,458 Nm.

What It Means for Heavy-Duty Pickups

GM has not released performance figures or confirmed the engine’s production timeline. The 8.3-litre unit could mark a significant shift in the heavy-duty diesel segment, where manufacturers continue to compete on power and towing capability.
