Formula 1 is heading back to Africa for the first time since 1993, with Rwanda signing a 10-year agreement to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix. The race is expected to join the calendar in the early 2030s, bringing the sport back to a continent that has been waiting more than three decades for its return.

The announcement was made by F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali alongside Rwandan President Paul Kagame and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

A New Circuit in Rwanda

The race will take place at a new circuit in Bugesera, around 40 km south of the capital, Kigali, and close to the new Kigali International Airport.

The track will be built to FIA Grade 1 standards and is expected to use the area’s natural elevation changes to create an interesting challenge for drivers. The venue is also planned to host other motorsport events, concerts and conferences throughout the year.

F1 says Africa already has more than 100 million fans, making the return an important step in reaching more audiences around the world.

V8 Engines Could Return

In another major development, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has publicly backed the return of V8 engines to Formula 1. He has indicated that the sport could bring them back by 2030.

F1 last used V8 engines in 2013 before switching to V6 hybrid power units in 2014. The proposed return would mean a change in the sport’s engine direction, although the final plans will depend on discussions with manufacturers.
