The BMW iX is the brand’s flagship SUV, and it focuses more on comfort and technology than outright driving excitement. We tested it in real-world conditions to see how it performs as a daily driving luxury EV.

Design: Unconventional but Functional

The iX stands out mainly because of its large front grille and clean surfacing. It may not appeal to everyone, but the design is purposeful, especially for aerodynamics.

From the side and rear, the styling is more balanced, with a strong road presence typical of a large SUV.

Interior: Minimal and Premium

The cabin follows a minimal design approach with a strong focus on space and material quality.

  • Large curved display combining infotainment and driver’s display
  • High-quality leather and soft-touch materials
  • Simple, uncluttered dashboard layout

The overall feel is more relaxed than sporty, prioritising comfort over driver-focused design.

Performance: Smooth and Linear

As expected from an EV, performance is immediate but not aggressive.

  • xDrive50: 516 hp, 765 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds
  • xDrive40: 326 hp, 630 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds
  • Instant torque delivery
  • Smooth acceleration without jerks
  • Very low noise levels

It feels quick in everyday driving, but the tuning is clearly aimed at refinement rather than excitement.

Range: Strong on Paper, Realistic in Use

  • xDrive50 (larger battery)
    • Claimed (WLTP): up to 635 km
    • Real-world: around 480-500 km in mixed driving
  • xDrive40 (smaller battery)
    • Claimed (WLTP): around 425 km
    • Real-world: roughly 350-360 km

Ride Quality: Strong Focus on Comfort

The suspension setup is tuned for comfort.

  • Handles bad roads well
  • Remains stable at highway speeds
  • Slight body roll during hard cornering

This is more of a long-distance cruiser than a performance SUV.

Technology: Well Integrated

The iX comes with a wide range of features, but the interface remains easy to use.

  • Clear and responsive infotainment system
  • Driver assistance features
  • Good sound system

Most functions are intuitive, and the system doesn’t feel overly complicated.

Practicality: Usable Everyday SUV

Despite its futuristic approach, the iX remains practical.

  • Good rear seat space
  • Flat floor improves comfort for passengers
  • Adequate boot space

It works well as a family SUV.

Verdict

The BMW iX is best suited for buyers looking for a premium electric SUV with a strong focus on comfort, space, and technology.

It does not aim to be sporty, and that’s evident in the way it drives. Instead, it delivers a refined and easy driving experience, which will appeal to most urban and highway users.
