BMW M has unveiled the new BMW M2 with M xDrive all-wheel drive, marking the first time the compact performance coupe has been offered with four driven wheels.
The update brings more grip, quicker acceleration, and greater confidence in all weather conditions, while retaining the playful character that has made the M2 one of BMW M’s most popular models.
The 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six engine produces 480 hp, while an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission channels that power to all four wheels through BMW’s new M xDrive system.
Engine Specifications
The addition of M xDrive helps the M2 launch harder than ever before, cutting the 0-100 km/h time to just 3.7 seconds, making it 0.3 seconds quicker than the rear-wheel-drive version. BMW electronically limits the M2 xDrive to 250 km/h, but the optional M Driver’s Package raises the top speed to 285 km/h.
BMW says the new M xDrive system preserves the M2’s signature rear-wheel-drive character. In everyday driving, the system sends power solely to the rear wheels and engages the front axle only when additional traction is needed.
For enthusiasts, BMW has also retained a 2WD mode, allowing drivers to disconnect the front axle entirely and enjoy a pure rear-wheel-drive experience with stability control switched off.
The new M2 also debuts BMW M Ignite technology, a motorsport-inspired pre-chamber combustion system that improves efficiency under heavy loads. BMW says the technology reduces fuel consumption during hard driving and track use while helping future M models meet stricter emissions regulations.

The M2 combines compact dimensions with sharp, engaging driving dynamics that continue to attract enthusiasts around the world. With the addition of M xDrive, BMW has made its smallest M car even quicker and more capable without completely sacrificing the rear-wheel-drive character enthusiasts cherish. Production begins in August 2026, with customer deliveries set to start later in the year.
