BMW Unveils Long-Wheelbase X5 and All-Electric iX5 Exclusively for China

BMW has revealed the long-wheelbase X5 and the all-electric iX5, developed exclusively for the Chinese market. The two SUVs combine the latest BMW X5 design with technologies from the brand’s Neue Klasse platform, while introducing market-specific features aimed at enhancing rear-seat comfort and digital connectivity.

Both models have been tailored specifically for Chinese customers, with the all-electric BMW iX5 scheduled to arrive in 2027.

Longer wheelbase for greater comfort

The biggest change is the extended wheelbase, which has been increased by 130 mm compared to the standard global X5.

The long-wheelbase models now feature:

  • 3,165 mm wheelbase
  • Increased rear legroom
  • Improved rear passenger comfort
  • Enhanced ride stability
  • More elegant side profile

BMW says the additional length has been designed to better suit customer preferences in China, where rear-seat comfort is a key priority.

China-specific design updates

The new X5 and iX5 receive several styling elements unique to the Chinese market.

Exterior highlights include:

  • New diagonal LED light signature
  • Optional double-X daytime running light graphics
  • Illuminated BMW Kidney Iconic Glow grille
  • Dynamic welcome and goodbye lighting animations
  • China-specific front bumper design for the X5

Neue Klasse-inspired interior

Inside, the SUVs adopt BMW’s latest cabin design language inspired by the Neue Klasse.

Key interior features include:

  • Floating central touchscreen running BMW Operating System X
  • BMW Passenger Screen (available on the X5 for the first time)
  • Three-dimensional illuminated ambient light strip
  • Premium slate and glass trim
  • Redesigned seats for improved comfort
  • Simplified monochromatic interior theme

Rear passengers also benefit from the latest BMW Theatre Screen, which supports:

  • 8K video streaming
  • Gaming
  • Video calls for remote working

AI-powered driver assistance

BMW has also developed a new driver assistance system specifically for China in collaboration with local technology company Momenta.

The new system offers:

  • Navigation-guided “Address-to-Address” driver assistance
  • End-to-end AI-based driving functions
  • Integration with BMW’s “Heart of Joy” central vehicle computer

According to BMW, the system has been trained using local driving conditions while maintaining the company’s focus on safety and reliability.

All-electric BMW iX5

The long-wheelbase iX5 becomes the first fully electric version of the X5 for the Chinese market.

It features:

  • Sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology
  • Adaptive two-axle air suspension as standard
  • Claimed CLTC range of over 1,000 km

BMW has not yet revealed power or battery specifications.

Launch timeline

The long-wheelbase BMW X5 will be offered with combustion engines, while the all-electric BMW iX5 is scheduled to arrive in 2027.
