Ford Mustang GTD Competition Sets New Nürburgring Record

Ford Motor Company has set a new Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record with the Ford Mustang GTD Competition, clocking a time of 6:40.835.

This improves on the car’s earlier 6:52.072 lap and makes it the fastest time recorded by an American brand at the track, notoriously known as “The Green Hell”.

A Faster Lap

Ford Racing driver Dirk Müller set the new lap time.

  • New lap time: 6:40.835
  • Previous time: 6:52.072
  • Improvement: Over 11 seconds (a lifetime in racing terms)

The car now holds two of the fastest Nürburgring lap times for an American brand, including the Ford GT Mk IV.

What Changed

Ford focused on four key areas to improve performance:

  • More power: Updates tuning pushes the 5.2-litre supercharged V8 beyond 815 hp
  • Better aerodynamics: New rear wing setup, front dive planes, aero discs
  • More grip: New high-performance tyres
  • Less weight: Magnesium wheels, carbon seats, and lighter components

These changes helped reduce lap time significantly.

Built with Motorsport Input

Ford says the GTD Competition directly benefits from its racing programme.

The development team focused on applying track learnings to a road-legal car, improving both performance and precision.

Team behind the Record

Ford credits its engineering team for the result.

Engineers, including Peter Kuechler, Sam Ashtiani, and Steve Thompson, worked on improving the car’s performance.

Steve Thompson also drove the car to a lap time of 6:49.337, faster than Muller’s earlier lap record.

Limited Availability

Ford will offer the Mustang GTD Competition as a limited, street-legal model.

  • Limited production
  • Serialized units
  • Applications reopened for North American Buyers

Conclusion

With this new lap time, Ford pushes the Mustang GTD further into supercar territory.

The focus remains on combining track performance with road usability, backed by motorsport development.
