George Russell returned to the top step of the podium with a commanding victory at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix, converting pole position into his seventh Formula 1 win. The Mercedes driver kept Max Verstappen at bay in the closing laps, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli completed the podium after another impressive drive.
The result also moves Russell back to second in the Drivers’ Championship, although Antonelli continues to lead the standings by 40 points.
Russell made a clean start from pole position and led comfortably through the opening stages of the race.
Verstappen recovered strongly after a difficult qualifying session and gradually fought his way into second, setting up an intense battle in the closing laps. Despite relentless pressure from the reigning world champion, Russell kept his cool to take victory by just 1.611 seconds.
Verstappen’s recovery drive was one of the standout performances of the afternoon. After several hard-fought battles, including an entertaining duel with Lewis Hamilton, the Red Bull driver climbed to second.
Although the Mercedes youngster made a few mistakes early on, he recovered well to finish just 0.375 seconds behind Verstappen at the chequered flag and further strengthened his championship lead.
Top 10 Finishers
The race featured plenty of action beyond the podium fight.
Hamilton and Verstappen produced one of the race’s best battles, while Racing Bulls enjoyed a strong outing with Lawson and Lindblad both scoring points. Ferrari endured a frustrating afternoon, with Hamilton finishing fifth and Leclerc only eighth.
Several teams also suffered reliability issues. Carlos Sainz retired after an electrical problem; both Cadillac drivers dropped out due to overheating brakes, and Lance Stroll’s race ended early due to a suspected ERS failure.

Mercedes finally delivered a performance worthy of a race win, with Russell controlling the race under immense pressure from Verstappen. Antonelli’s podium further strengthens his title campaign, while Verstappen once again proved why he remains one of Formula 1’s toughest racers. With the championship battle heating up, attention now shifts to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix.
