The flagship luxury sedan segment has long been dominated by two cars, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the BMW 7 Series. Both represent technology, comfort and engineering that their brands can offer.

We tested both the Merc and the Beemer. The S-Class focuses on traditional comfort and refinement, while the 7 Series learns heavily into technology and bold design.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The S-Class is offered in India with both petrol and diesel engines.

  • S 450 4MATIC: 3.0-litre turbo-petrol with a mild-hybrid system

Fuel efficiency figures range from 12 kmpl for the petrol variant to about 18 kmpl for the diesel variant.

BMW 7 Series

In India, the 7 Series is typically offered with a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine.

  • Torque: 520 Nm
  • Gearbox: 8-speed automatic transmission

The petrol model delivers around 12.6 kmpl, while diesel variants in some markets can deliver up to 16 kmpl.

Despite their size, both cars offer very different driving characteristics.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is priced from roughly ₹1.78 crore to about ₹1.9 crore (ex-showroom).

Verdict

Both sedans deliver exceptional luxury, but they cater to different buyers. However, we strongly suggest that buyers test-drive these cars before making a decision.

Choose the S-Class if you want:

  • Maximum comfort
  • Traditional luxury
  • A calmer, more refined experience

Choose the 7 Series if you want:

  • More technology
  • A futuristic interior
  • A slightly sportier drive

In the end, the S-Class remains the benchmark for comfort, while the 7 Series stands out for technology and innovation.
