The global motorsport community is in mourning following the confirmed passing of Hari Singh. He is one of India’s most iconic rally drivers. Singh, 59, died following a high-speed boat accident near Felidhoo Island in the Maldives. Maldivian authorities recovered his body on March 22 after an intensive 48-hour search and rescue operation.

The accident occurred late on Thursday, March 19, when a high-performance racing boat carrying seven passengers capsized in choppy waters. While several other passengers were rescued shortly after the incident, Singh and the vessel’s captain remained trapped.

Known affectionately as the “Gypsy King” and the “Flying Sikh,” Hari Singh was the undisputed face of Indian rallying during the 1990s. His career was inextricably linked with the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, a vehicle he mastered despite its challenging handling characteristics at rally speeds.

After retiring from active competition, Singh transitioned into pivotal roles that shaped the future of Indian racing.

  • JK Tyre Motorsport: As the Head of Operations, he was instrumental in talent scouting and managing national-level racing programs that fostered a new generation of drivers.
  • Mercedes-Benz India: He served as the Chief Instructor for the luxury brand’s driving academy. This is where he mentored nearly every prominent Indian driver currently on the grid, from Formula 1 veterans to current rally champions.
  • Recognition: In 2015, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award. This was for his nearly four decades of contribution to the sport.

The Accident: Investigation Details

According to reports from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the vessel was travelling significantly above local safety advisories for night travel when it overturned. The search involved specialised divers who eventually located the victims trapped within a coral reef formation. The tragedy has triggered a wave of tributes from the fraternity. The former F1 drivers and rally champions describing Singh as a “gentle giant” and a master of car control.

Hari Singh leaves behind a legacy that transcends trophies. He is remembered for a driving style that was often described as “smooth-as-silk”.
