The all new X7 and refreshed 7-Series.

BMW India has finally launched the latest version of its flagship saloon, the 7 Series, alongside the German automotive brand’s first-ever seven-seater luxury SUV — the X7. Prices for the updated G12-generation BMW 7 Series start from Rs 1.22 crore and go all the way upto Rs 2.42 crore. Meanwhile, the list price of the X7 starts at a lesser Rs 98.90 mark. The prices are ex-showroom (India).

Besides the host of technology and features offered on the inside and outside, the two premium products also showcase the brand’s latest design philosophy; signified by the enormous kidney grille. Whilst the 2019 7 Series shares a lot with the outgoing model, the X7 brags the title of being ‘the biggest BMW SUV ever made’.

Starting with the saloon, the 2019 BMW 7 Series is available in four engine formats: 730Ld (3.0-litre i6 diesel), 740Li (3.0-litre i6 petrol), 745Le (3.0-litre i6 petrol hybrid) and m760Li (6.6-litre V12). There are six variants in total; starting off with the 730Ld DPE (Design Pure Excellence).

The 30d versions generate 260bhp and 620Nm of torque. The figures produced by the 40Li are 340bhp and 450 while they rise to 380bhp and 600Nm in the hybrid 45Le avatar. As for the top-of-the-line 60Li, the monstrous twin-turbo V12 pushes out 609bhp and 850Nm. Depending on the variant, the output is sent to either the rear wheels or all four wheels via BMW’s X-Drive AWD system. Transmission duties are handled by an eight-speed automatic.

Being based on the same CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform, the BMW X7 shares identical powertrains with the new 7. As of now, we get only the xDrive30d and xDrive40i variants in the country. However, BMW India has promised an M50d variant for the not-too-distant future. It will sport a 3.0-litre ‘quad-turbo’ straight-six engine making 400bhp and 760Nm.

On the equipment department, both models feature the brand’s latest 12.3-inch instrument console with built-in heads-up display. The iDrive infotainment system is loaded with even more advanced functionalities. The X7’s main highlight is, of course, its third-row of seating with enough space to prevent anyone from complaining too much. Furthermore, there is a ‘crystal’ gearknob to add to the overall drama.

BMW has clearly got two strong contenders for the niche (yet competitive) luxury car market of India. Whether they have enough to take on the growing likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the GLS is what we have to wait and see.
