Skoda Auto and JSW Green Mobility have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore a strategic joint venture in India. The proposed partnership would combine Skoda’s engineering and product capabilities with JSW Group’s manufacturing strength.
The proposed JV would develop, manufacture and sell passenger vehicles for India and export markets, covering ICE, electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid powertrains. However, discussions are still at an early stage and no definitive agreement has been signed.
The partnership is proposed to operate under joint control, although the ownership structure and commercial terms are yet to be finalised.
A 51:49 structure with JSW as the majority partner has reportedly been considered, although this has not been officially confirmed.
The proposed collaboration will focus on expanding the product portfolio, increasing localisation and strengthening manufacturing and R&D capabilities in India.
The inclusion of multiple powertrains suggests the partnership will extend beyond EVs. Potential JSW investment could also support vehicles based on Volkswagen Group’s proposed India Main Platform (IMP) EV architecture.
The proposed JV would manufacture vehicles for select international markets alongside domestic production, supporting Volkswagen Group’s plans to make India a regional manufacturing and export base.
If finalised, the partnership could become the third automotive vertical for JSW Group, after JSW MG Motor India and JSW Motors.

The proposed Skoda-JSW partnership could bring greater localisation, manufacturing scale and new products to India while expanding the country’s role as an export hub for Volkswagen Group. However, with the MoU still non-binding, the ownership structure, investment, products and timeline remain subject to further negotiations and approvals.
