When it comes to the argument for the popular car makers in India, no other brand can outweigh the popularity bar that made by Maruti for the past several decades. In the same sense considering the popular model made by Maruti, Wagon R is literally in the top 5 charts. This statement can be conceded by looking at the 2.2 million WagonR’s sold by Maruti for the past two generations and the outstanding 24% market share it gained from its own segment.

The tall boy design element which is derived from the Kei car concept in Japan shows its low bonnet and vertical tailgate along with raised body height which helps to improve the practicality and space utility of the vehicle. It is evident that the new generation WagonR, Maruti so-called the ‘big new wagon R’ can retain its predecessor’s design cues and practicality along with new youthful elements and thereby make it perfect for both family and youngsters.

The body of this vehicle is built under Maruti’s new Heartect lightweight platform, which ensures more rigidity and safety with the use of high tensile steel, minimalizing the areas of reinforcement by creating smooth shape and reduced bends. Consequently, Maruti has succeeded in reducing the overall weight of the vehicle and thereby increasing fuel efficiency to a great extent. Furthermore, the lighter body doesn’t mean that the vehicle is prone to deformation on impacts. In fact, it is capable of reducing the energy of the collision and literally prevents the impacts to be transformed into the passenger compartment and thereby saving the occupants.

The increased wheelbase and width of the vehicle provides more legroom and headroom than the previous model. The new driver seat and revised gear lever arrangement improve the drivability nevertheless, lack of driver seat height adjustment is a drawback. When it comes to the rear passenger seat the overall comfort is good, the cushion and backrest arrangements are better than before. On the other hand, the lack of thigh support at the rear is a drawback but, three passengers can comfortably accommodate at the rear.

A new minimalistic dashboard design can be seen in this model which includes the smart round dials on the instrument cluster. The 17.76-inch smart play infotainment system is a key attraction on the dashboard which ensures a more effective touch response along with some demanding graphics. The infotainment system is equipped with a function called smart- play which enables to control the vehicle infotainment through a smartphone and along with it, the usual Android auto and Apple car play were also included. The absence of a reverse camera is a huge drawback, however; a reverse parking sensor is available instead.

The new design characteristics in exterior make the new Wagon R more aesthetically appealing than the previous ones. The prime attraction is the front fascia which includes the large cutting edge design headlights, new grille treatment and the bumper with huge air vents. Maruti tries to keep the old proportions in the side profile however, some new design cues can be evident which includes; the concavely shaped wheel arch design, curvier character lines and the new c pillar design as seen in swift.

While looking at the rear portion of the vehicle the size of the bumper is re-dimensioned than the previous model and the integration of wheel arch line into rear bumper is awesome. The tail light is more vertical than before and the curve at the bottom is well matched with the body design. The boot lid is bigger than the previous model and boot space is top in its segment, also a second-row seat folding is available in order to increase the capacity of boot further.

NVH elements are improved compared to the previous models but some amount of road noise is audible above the speed of 80kmph. The new driver alert function given above the speed of 80kmph is a new feature in this segment.
