Volvo Auto India launched the new XC60 in India at Rs. 55. 90 Lakhs. We are comparing the new XC60 against its key rivals BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC. Both BMW X3 and Audi Q5 will soon get new generation models. Volvo introduced XC60 in fully loaded Inscription variant while German rivals offer their cars in multiple variants which is good and bad at the same time as it gives options for customers and confusion too. But the price difference between XC60 and its competitors is large considering that you get lot more features in Volvo than German rivals. Volvo undercuts its nearest competitor by almost 2 Lakhs and thus making XC60 best VFM product in its segment.
The XC60 is the only car in its segment to offer autonomous driving and international safety features standard in India even though rivals offer them in abroad. We are comparing diesel variants only as Volvo is currently offering only diesel engine with XC60. The XC60, X3 and Q5 are all powered by 2.0 L diesel engines while GLC is powered by 2143 cc engine but the Merc produces the least power among these models at 170 HP followed by Q3 at 174 HP, X3 at 190 HP and XC60 at 235 HP. The XC60 also give more torque of 480 NM while X3 and GLC gives 400 NM and Q3 at 380 NM. The XC60 and X3 get 8 speed gearbox, Q3 get 7 speed and 9 speed gearbox for GLC. All these models get four wheel drive as an option or standard feature on higher spec models.
In terms of wheelbase, GLC offers 2873 mm followed by XC60 at 2865 mm, X3 at 2810 mm and Q5 at 2807 mm. But practically both GLC and XC60 offers similar interior space. The Volvo is also the heaviest in its class with a kerb weight of 2520 kgs which is almost half ton more than the lightest which is GLC. All these SUVs have top speed of over 200 kph and the Volvo is the slowest because of its kerb weight. The kerb weight against plays a roll in efficiency as the XC60 returns only 11.2 Kmpl against 18.56 Kmpl for X3 which is the most efficient SUV in its class. Volvo XC60 is stylish, feature loaded, powerful and the cheapest in its segment which will help XC60 find more home than its earlier model.
