Defender has unveiled the Defender Dakar, a road-legal evolution of the D7X-R that won the 2026 Dakar Rally on its debut. Revealed as a Design Preview Model at Monterey Car Week, the limited-run 4×4 brings the race car’s extreme off-road hardware to the road, while retaining the Defender OCTA-based architecture and powertrain.
The Defender Dakar will be available to reserve from early 2027, with more details set to be revealed at the 2027 Dakar Rally.
Built from the Dakar winner
The Defender Dakar shares much of its mechanical foundation with the D7X-R competition car.

Unlike the competition car, the road-going Defender Dakar gets the V8 in its unrestricted 635hp form.
Rally car looks, road-legal package
The design is heavily influenced by the D7X-R, with a number of changes made specifically for the road-going model.

The signature colour combination is Dakar Sand with a Yanbu Turquoise roof, inspired by the livery of the Dakar-winning race car.
A cabin built for adventure
Inside, the Defender Dakar gets a 2+2 seating layout with specially designed front race seats. Four-point racing harnesses will be available as an option, while the rear area has been designed to accommodate race helmets.
There is also dedicated mounting for the spare wheel and air compressor in the load space.
From Dakar to the road
The D7X-R made history at the 2026 Dakar Rally, with three cars finishing first, second and fourth in the Stock class. The team also secured a 1-2-3 result on 10 of the 13 stages.
The Defender Dakar essentially takes that competition experience and turns it into an extreme road-going 4×4.
Final Take
The Defender Dakar is about as close as a manufacturer can get to putting a Dakar machine on the road. With 635hp, 35-inch tyres, rally suspension and Flight Mode, it takes the already extreme Defender OCTA formula several steps further.
Reservations open in early 2027, with pricing and full specifications still to be announced.
