Audi has appointed Thomas Fuhr as CEO of Audi Formula Racing GmbH, which develops and manufactures the power unit for its Formula 1 programme. He will take charge from November 1, 2026.

Fuhr brings over 30 years of engineering and leadership experience. He previously served as managing director of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains from 2009 to 2012 before holding senior positions at GROHE, LIXIL and Georg Fischer Building Flow Solutions.

Strengthening Audi’s F1 Operations

The appointment will allow Stefan Dreyer, Audi Formula Racing’s chief technology officer, to focus on the technical development of the F1 power unit. Christian Foyer will continue overseeing operations at the Neuburg facility in Germany.

Established in 2022, Audi Formula Racing is responsible for developing and manufacturing the complete drivetrain, including the hybrid system and gearbox, for Audi’s F1 entry. Its Neuburg facility has more than 20 engine and component test benches.

Audi entered Formula 1 in 2026 with its own factory team and a hybrid power unit developed in Germany. The programme operates across Neuburg, Hinwil in Switzerland, where the race car is developed and race operations are managed, and Bicester in the UK, which supports recruitment and technical partnerships.

Final Take

Fuhr’s appointment strengthens Audi’s leadership as it builds its presence in Formula 1. His previous experience at Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains brings relevant industry expertise, while the revised leadership structure allows Audi to focus separately on technical development and operational management.
