Freelander 8 Debuts as JLR-Chery Venture Reveals First New SUV

The Freelander 8 has made its global debut, marking the first production model from the new joint venture between Jaguar Land Rover and Chery. But despite the familiar name, this is not a new Land Rover; Freelander is now being positioned as a standalone premium brand.

And this isn’t a one-off. The Freelander 8 is expected to be the first of six new models, with more SUVs set to follow over the next few years.

A Big SUV, Not a Compact Freelander

Despite the badge, this is nothing like the old compact Freelander.

At 5.1 metres long, the Freelander 8 is actually larger than a Land Rover Defender 110, with space for up to seven occupants. It sits as the flagship of the new brand and looks aimed squarely at the premium large SUV market.

Some early highlights include:

  • Seven-seat premium SUV layout
  • Larger than a Defender 110
  • Plug-in hybrid powertrain confirmed
  • Battery-electric models are also planned

The model will reportedly use Chery-derived electrified powertrains, rather than JLR’s existing systems.

A New Platform, New Tech

The Freelander range is expected to use Chery’s iMax architecture, a scalable platform that can support:

  • Plug-in hybrids
  • Range-extender hybrids
  • Full electric models

That flexibility could be key as the brand expands globally.

Design Takes Some Defender Inspiration

Styling has clear SUV toughness, with a few bits that may remind people of Land Rover products, even if this is a separate brand.

Design highlights include:

  • Boxy futuristic headlights
  • Split rear quarter window
  • Large wheels and upright proportions
  • Full-width digital display inside
  • Physical controls retained below the touchscreen

The cabin appears to blend heavy digital presence with a few traditional controls, something many buyers may appreciate.

What This Partnership Means

The bigger story may be the collaboration itself.

This venture combines:

  • JLR’s design expertise
  • Chery’s EV and platform technology
  • A new standalone premium SUV brand

The company says a new model could arrive every six months once the rollout begins.

India Possibility

There’s no word on India yet, but the Freelander 8 could fit well here as interest in premium electric and hybrid SUVs grows. And with Jaguar Land Rover already present in India, a future launch is possible.
