The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has evolved from a military vehicle into one of the world’s most recognisable luxury SUVs. Among all its variants, the G63 AMG 6×6 stands out as one of the most extreme. Originally based on a six-wheel-drive military vehicle developed for the Australian Army, Mercedes-AMG transformed it into a road-legal production model with luxury, performance and serious off-road capability.
The example featured here is even more exclusive, carrying a one-off factory specification with a unique paint finish commissioned for its original owner.
The G63 6×6 retains the familiar shape of the previous-generation G-Class but adds an extra axle, a pickup-style cargo bed, and significantly higher ground clearance.
Carbon-fibre wheel arch extensions accommodate the massive 37-inch mud-terrain tyres, while retractable side steps make it easier to climb into the tall cabin. The wooden-lined cargo bed and aggressive stance complete its distinctive appearance.
Highlights include:
Inside, the cabin remains similar to the standard G63 AMG of its era, featuring leather upholstery and AMG-specific detailing.
One unique addition is the central tyre inflation system, which allows the driver to inflate or deflate all six tyres from inside the cabin. Rear seat space is adequate, while the revised suspension offers a more compliant ride than the standard AMG G-Class.
Power comes from AMG’s 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8, producing 554hp and 760Nm, paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission.
Performance figures:
The biggest engineering highlight is the portal axle setup, derived from the Mercedes-Benz Unimog. This design increases ground clearance by placing the axle above the wheel centre through reduction gears.
Combined with three locking differentials, permanent four-wheel drive, six driven wheels and adjustable tyre pressures, the G63 6×6 is built for demanding terrain rather than just appearance.

The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 represents one of the boldest engineering projects undertaken by AMG. It combines luxury, V8 performance, and genuine off-road hardware in a package that remains unmatched even today.
While its rarity means most examples now spend more time in private collections than on challenging trails, the engineering underneath proves it was designed to do far more than simply attract attention. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, it remains one of the most significant modern G-Class models ever produced.
