Toyota to Build New Vehicle Manufacturing Plant in Maharashtra

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has announced plans to build a brand-new vehicle manufacturing plant in Maharashtra, further expanding Toyota’s presence in India.

The new facility will come up in Bidkin Industrial Area, Maharashtra, and production is expected to begin in the first half of 2029.

A Big Expansion for Toyota in India

Toyota says the new factory is aimed at strengthening its long-term business in India while also supporting demand in nearby global markets.

The plant will have:

  • Production capacity of 1 lakh vehicles per year
  • Around 2,800 employees at the start of operations

Key manufacturing processes will include:

  • Stamping
  • Welding
  • Painting
  • Final assembly

A New SUV Will Be Built There

Toyota has confirmed that the new plant will manufacture a brand-new SUV model.

However, the company has not yet revealed details about the vehicle itself.

Toyota’s Growing India Presence

Toyota currently operates two major plants in Bidadi, Karnataka.

Its existing India lineup includes vehicles such as:

  • Toyota Innova HyCross
  • Toyota Fortuner
  • Toyota Hilux
  • Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder
  • Toyota Camry Hybrid

Together, Toyota’s current India operations already have production capacity of 3.42 lakh vehicles annually, and the new Maharashtra plant will further increase that number.

Why This Matters

The announcement is another sign of how important India is becoming for global carmakers.

Toyota says the new plant will help:

  • Respond faster to future demand growth
  • Strengthen exports to nearby regions
  • Support India’s automotive industry and local communities

India Becoming a Manufacturing Hub

Over the last few years, India has increasingly become a major production base for several global manufacturers, especially for SUVs and export-focused models.

Toyota’s latest investment further strengthens that trend.

Final Take

Toyota’s new Maharashtra plant is a major long-term investment in India’s automotive future. With a new SUV planned and additional production capacity coming by 2029, Toyota clearly sees India as not just a large market but also an important manufacturing hub for the region.
