Volkswagen Announces New Sub-4 Metre SUV for India, Launch Set for 2027

Volkswagen has announced plans to introduce an all-new sub-4 metre compact SUV in India in 2027. The upcoming model will become the brand’s most accessible SUV in the country and is expected to help Volkswagen tap into one of India’s largest passenger vehicle segments.

The new SUV will be developed specifically for India and manufactured locally, further strengthening Volkswagen’s commitment to the market.

Built on the MQB-A0-IN platform

Like other locally developed models from the Skoda Auto Volkswagen India group, the upcoming SUV will be based on the MQB-A0-IN platform.

Volkswagen says the platform has been developed with a strong focus on localisation, efficient production and lower cost of ownership while also supporting modern technology, safety systems and powertrains suited to Indian conditions.

Key highlights of the upcoming SUV include:

  • Sub-4 metre compact SUV for India
  • Launch scheduled for 2027
  • Volkswagen’s most accessible SUV in India
  • Based on the MQB-A0-IN platform
  • Developed specifically for Indian customers
  • Locally manufactured in India
  • Focus on German engineering, safety and build quality
  • Designed to compete in India’s high-volume compact SUV segment

Volkswagen says the model will also help expand its supplier and manufacturing ecosystem in India. The SUV has been co-developed by engineering teams in India and Europe.

A push for volume

The new compact SUV represents an important move for Volkswagen India. While the brand currently operates in higher segments with models such as the Taigun and Tiguan, the upcoming SUV will allow it to enter the highly competitive sub-4 metre space with a more accessible offering.

Volkswagen is yet to reveal the name, design, engine options, features or pricing of the upcoming SUV.

Final Take

Volkswagen has been missing from one of India’s biggest SUV segments for a long time. This new sub-4 metre SUV could change that. If Volkswagen manages to combine the MQB-A0-IN platform’s strengths with competitive pricing and localisation, the 2027 launch could become one of the brand’s most important moves in India yet.
