BMW Opens Bookings for the First-Ever i5 Long Wheelbase in India

BMW India has opened bookings for the first-ever BMW i5 Long Wheelbase, marking another important step in the brand’s electric vehicle push in India. The i5 LWB will be locally produced at BMW Group Plant Chennai, making it BMW India’s first locally manufactured electric sedan and its second locally produced EV.

More space, with a focus on rear-seat comfort

The i5 Long Wheelbase measures 5,175mm in length and has a 3,105mm wheelbase, with BMW positioning it as the largest and most spacious electric sedan in its segment. The longer wheelbase is designed to offer a roomier rear cabin, aimed at buyers who prefer being chauffeured.

Other highlights include:

  • 81.6kWh battery pack
  • Claimed range of up to 669km (MIDC)
  • 268hp electric motor
  • 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds
  • Adaptive rear-axle air suspension
  • Increased ground clearance for Indian conditions

The i5 LWB combines the familiar executive-sedan format of the 5 Series with an all-electric powertrain, while placing greater emphasis on comfort and space for rear passengers.

Limited First Edition for 99 customers

To mark the launch, BMW will offer an exclusive i5 LWB First Edition, limited to just 99 customers.

The special version adds a rear-seat entertainment package with a tablet and tablet holder, along with Silver Bronze interior accents, Fineline open-pore wood trim, and a ‘FIRST EDITION’ engraving on the dashboard.

On the outside, it gets Carbon Black Metallic paint paired with Titanium Bronze accents, giving the First Edition a more distinctive appearance.

Final Take

The BMW i5 LWB brings something relatively new to India’s luxury EV market: a locally produced, long-wheelbase electric sedan designed as much for the rear passenger as the driver. With a claimed 669km range, generous dimensions and a limited 99-unit First Edition, it could appeal to buyers looking for an electric alternative to traditional chauffeur-driven luxury sedans.
