Mercedes-AMG is preparing a major change for its performance sedan lineup.
The current Mercedes-AMG C63, which uses a turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid setup, will reportedly be phased out and replaced by a new C53 powered by a six-cylinder engine.
The Four-Cylinder Experiment Didn’t Really Work
When AMG replaced the old V8-powered C63 with a highly advanced four-cylinder hybrid system, the reaction from enthusiasts was mixed from day one.
On paper, the car was incredibly impressive.
It offered:
- Huge power
- Advanced hybrid technology
- Strong performance figures
But many buyers felt something was missing.
A big part of the criticism came down to:
- Lack of raw engine sound
- Added weight from the hybrid system
- Losing the traditional AMG character that people expected from a C63
Even AMG boss Michael Schiebe previously admitted that while the technology was advanced, it simply did not connect with customers the way AMG had hoped.
Why AMG Is Changing Direction
Interestingly, customer feedback is not the only reason behind the change. According to AMG, upcoming Euro 7 emissions regulations are also making it difficult to continue developing the current four-cylinder setup for the future.
As a result, AMG is now moving toward a more traditional inline-six engine for the next model.
Meet the New C53
The replacement is expected to be called the Mercedes-AMG C53.
It will reportedly use the same 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine found in the Mercedes-AMG CLE53.
That engine produces:
- 443 hp
- 560 Nm of torque
Yes, that is less power than the outgoing C63 hybrid, which produced 671 hp and 1,020 Nm of torque. But the new car is also expected to be lighter and simpler, which could make it feel more natural and engaging to drive.
The V8 May Still Return
Interestingly, this may not be the end of the C63 name forever. Reports suggest AMG is already planning to bring back the C63, potentially with a new flat-plane-crank V8 engine seen in the Mercedes-Benz S580.
So, the upcoming C53 could act as a temporary bridge before AMG fully brings back a V8-powered flagship.

Conclusion
The current Mercedes-AMG C63 may have been technically brilliant, but it never truly won over traditional AMG fans. By moving back to a six-cylinder setup, and possibly with a V8 later, AMG appears to be reconnecting with what buyers actually want from a performance sedan.
