Porsche has updated the Taycan for the 2027 model year, and the biggest change is one enthusiasts probably didn’t see coming. The German carmaker has introduced a new E-Shift system that adds virtual gear changes to its electric sports sedan, bringing a more engaging driving experience to every Taycan variant.

Alongside that, Porsche has also upgraded the infotainment system, expanded charging capabilities, and made the larger battery standard across more models.

Taycan Now Gets Virtual Gears

The new E-Shift system aims to make the Taycan feel more like a traditional Porsche sports car.

Drivers can now use steering-mounted paddles to shift through eight simulated gears, complete with virtual revs, shift lights, and a reworked Porsche Electric Sport Sound.

Porsche says the system creates a more emotional connection between driver and car by adding sound, movement, and visual feedback during acceleration.

E-Shift highlights:

  • Eight simulated gears
  • Steering-wheel-mounted paddles
  • Virtual rev counter
  • Shift lights in the instrument cluster
  • Enhanced Porsche Electric Sport Sound
  • Automatic and manual modes

The feature will be standard on the Taycan Turbo GT and optional on other variants.

Bigger Battery Becomes Standard

Porsche has also improved the Taycan’s battery package.

The larger Performance Battery Plus is now standard on the Taycan, Taycan 4, and Taycan 4S.

Battery upgrades:

  • 105kWh Performance Battery Plus
  • Standard on Taycan, Taycan 4, and Taycan 4S
  • 320kW DC fast charging capability
  • New battery health display

The update should improve both charging performance and long-term ownership transparency.

Faster, Smarter Infotainment

Porsche says the new software delivers up to five times more computing power than before.

New features include:

  • AI-powered voice assistant
  • Enhanced Apple CarPlay integration
  • Android Auto support
  • New 3D vehicle display
  • Customisable widgets
  • Improved charging planner
  • Over-the-air updates
  • 25W wireless phone charging

Drivers can also personalise the cabin with new digital themes and ambient lighting combinations.

Final Take

The Taycan was already one of the best-driving EVs on sale. With E-Shift, Porsche is addressing one of the biggest criticisms of electric performance cars, the lack of engagement. Whether virtual gears become a gimmick or a genuine enthusiast favourite remains to be seen, but it shows Porsche is willing to experiment to keep the driving experience at the heart of its EV future.
