Tamil Nadu could soon take its motorsport ambitions to an entirely new level. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has announced plans to develop a dedicated Motor Sports City, featuring an international-standard racetrack designed to host everything from grassroots racing to Formula 1.
The proposed facility is also expected to focus on nurturing young Indian racing talent while creating new opportunities for tourism, manufacturing and employment.
A New Home for Indian Motorsport?
Tamil Nadu has long been one of India’s strongest motorsport hubs. The state is already home to the Madras International Circuit, Kari Motor Speedway and the Madras International Karting Arena.
The proposed Motor Sports City could build on this foundation with a larger, more comprehensive motorsport ecosystem.
According to Vijay, the new venue aims to host international categories including:
- Formula 4
- Formula 3
- Formula 2
- Formula 1
The exact location and construction timeline, however, are yet to be announced.
More Than Just a Racetrack
A key focus of the Motor Sports City will be driver development, with plans for training facilities that could identify and nurture young talent and provide them with opportunities to compete at national and international levels.

Could Formula 1 Return to India?
India last hosted the Formula 1 Indian Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit between 2011 and 2013. Since then, the sport has stayed away from the country due to a combination of financial, taxation and organisational challenges.
While the idea of a new F1-capable circuit is exciting, hosting Formula 1 requires much more than simply building a world-class track. Promoters, government support, commercial viability and long-term commitments will all play an important role.
