BMW X1 LWB Bookings Open in India Ahead of August 21 Launch

BMW India has opened bookings for the new X1 Long Wheelbase, with the SUV set to launch in India on August 21. The X1 LWB is essentially a stretched version of the standard X1 and will become BMW’s most accessible combustion-powered long-wheelbase model in India.

BMW X1 LWB: What’s different?

The X1 LWB measures 4,616mm in length and gets a 2,802mm wheelbase. Compared to the standard X1, it is 116mm longer and has a 110mm longer wheelbase, while also being 11mm taller.

More space inside

The biggest advantage of the LWB version is the additional space for rear passengers.

Rear-seat legroom has increased, while the seat height is 27mm higher and the headrest cushions are 37mm wider. Boot space has also grown to 540 litres, compared to 476 litres in the standard X1.

BMW X1 LWB: Engine and gearbox

The India-spec engine has not been confirmed yet. In China, the X1 LWB is offered with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 204hp and 300Nm.

It is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The sDrive25Li takes 7.9 seconds to reach 100kph, while the xDrive25Li AWD version does it in 7.7 seconds.

The standard X1 currently uses a 136hp 1.5-litre turbo-petrol or a 150hp 2.0-litre diesel engine in India.

BMW X1 LWB: Price and launch

The standard X1 is currently priced from ₹50.90 lakh to ₹52.90 lakh (ex-showroom). The X1 LWB is expected to command a premium, although BMW is yet to reveal its price.

The SUV will be locally assembled at BMW’s Chennai plant, with bookings now open through BMW dealerships.

The X1 LWB brings something the standard SUV cannot, significantly more room for rear passengers. With its stretched wheelbase, larger boot and expected premium features, BMW is positioning it as a more comfort-focused alternative to the standard X1.

If BMW brings the 204hp petrol engine to India, the X1 LWB could also offer a useful jump in performance. Its combination of extra space, local assembly and BMW branding makes it an interesting new option in the entry-level luxury SUV segment.
