Ferrari has revived one of its most loved driver-focused features with the launch of the 12Cilindri Manuale, marking the return of a manual gearbox to a road-going Ferrari after almost 15 years.
Limited to 1,499 units worldwide, the special edition pairs the brand’s naturally aspirated V12 with an innovative manual-by-wire system that blends traditional driving engagement with modern transmission technology.
At first glance, the 12Cilindri Manuale looks like a classic Ferrari. It gets an open-gate gear selector, a clutch pedal, and a beautifully machined aluminium gear knob. But underneath, things are far more advanced.
Instead of a conventional mechanical linkage, Ferrari’s new Manuale by-wire system uses electronic sensors to detect clutch and gear lever movements. The company says the setup has been engineered to recreate the mechanical feel of a traditional manual, complete with a weighted gearshift, realistic clutch resistance, and even the iconic metallic ‘snick’ when slotting into gear.
Drivers can enjoy heel-and-toe downshifts, blip the throttle, and row through six manual gears, all while being protected from costly over-revs caused by incorrect shifts.
Here’s where things get interesting.
While the driver manually operates six forward gears, the underlying eight-speed dual-clutch transmission remains. At the press of a button, the car can switch into fully automatic mode, unlocking the seventh and eighth gears for effortless highway cruising.
It’s an unusual approach that combines old-school involvement with the convenience of a modern automatic.
The Manuale also receives an exclusive Tailor-Made specification inspired by the legendary 365 GTB4 Daytona.
Highlights include:
Power continues to come from Ferrari’s acclaimed naturally aspirated V12, allowing drivers to enjoy every upshift and downshift all the way to its soaring 9,500rpm redline.
Rather than chasing faster lap times, the Manuale is all about restoring the connection between driver and machine.

The 12Cilindri Manuale isn’t Ferrari going backwards; it’s Ferrari reminding enthusiasts why manuals became legendary in the first place.
After the mixed opinions for the Ferrari Luce, the 12Cilindri Manuale almost feels like an act of penance, a reminder that while Ferrari is embracing the future, it hasn’t forgotten the purists who helped build its legacy.
