American auto giant Ford has set another record, this time in straight-line performance. The new Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 has become the quickest electric vehicle in the world, clocking a 6.87-second quarter mile at 355 kmph.

That is serious drag racing territory, and remarkable even by EV standards.

More Power, Less Weight

The Cobra Jet 2200 builds on the earlier Cobra Jet 1800, but brings major changes.

Key numbers include:

  • 2,200 horsepower
  • 6.87-second quarter mile
  • 355 kmph trap speed

Interestingly, Ford has moved from four motors to two, while increasing output and reducing weight. Charging times have also been improved.

Big Focus on Traction

What makes the car especially interesting is the hardware underneath.

Ford says the dragster uses:

  • Multi-speed transmission
  • Centrifugal clutch setup
  • Special launch torque management
  • Direct-drive setup at speed

That unusual clutch and transmission system is designed to help put massive power down off the line, where drag races are often won or lost.

Safety Upgrades Too

With this much power, safety has also been a focus.

The Cobra Jet 2200 gets an emergency power-cut system that can instantly disconnect the high-voltage system if needed, by the driver, race crew or track officials.

Why It Matters

This isn’t a road car, but it shows how far electric performance has come.

A 6.87-second quarter-mile is outrageous by any measure, and enough to put this Mustang in elite drag racing company, not just among EVs but overall.

Conclusion

The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 may be a testbed, but it has delivered a big statement. With 2,200 hp and a world-record quarter-mile pass, Ford has shown that electric drag racing is moving into another league.
