Harley-Davidson could soon bring back the iconic Sprint name, and this time, it may be based on the made-in-India Harley-Davidson X440.
The upcoming bike is expected to become one of Harley’s most affordable global models and will be part of the company’s new revival strategy called “Back to Bricks.”
A New Affordable Harley
Harley-Davidson says it wants to attract younger and more budget-conscious riders instead of focusing only on expensive cruisers.
The new Sprint is expected to play a major role in that plan.
While official details are still limited, early illustrations shared by Harley strongly suggest the bike will use:
- The X440’s engine
- Similar tubular frame
- Hero MotoCorp-developed platform
Different Styling from the X440
Even though it may share its base with the X440, the new Sprint is expected to look quite different.
The bike could get:
- Teardrop-shaped fuel tank
- Lower seat height
- Higher handlebar
- More classic Harley roadster stance
So, while the mechanics may be familiar, the overall feel could be more traditionally Harley-Davidson.
What Engine Could It Use?
The bike is expected to retain the same 440cc single-cylinder, oil-cooled engine as on the X440.
That engine has already helped Harley enter a more accessible segment in markets like India.
Not Coming Immediately
Although Harley first spoke about the Sprint returning in 2026, reports now suggest the production version may not arrive until 2027.
The Sprint Name Has History
The original Harley-Davidson Sprint dates back to the 1960s and was based on motorcycles from Italian brand Aermacchi’s motorcycle division, which was later acquired by Harley-Davidson. It started as a small 250cc motorcycle before later growing to 350cc models.
Production eventually ended in 1974.
Harley’s Bigger Plan
The new Sprint is part of a much larger strategy. Harley-Davidson plans to introduce up to 20 new models over the next three years.
Most of these will use existing platforms to reduce development costs. The company has struggled in recent years to grow beyond its traditional customer base, especially among younger riders, and the new affordable motorcycles are expected to help change that.

India Could Play a Big Role
Because the bike is likely based on the Indian-made X440, India could become an important production and export hub for Harley’s smaller motorcycles.
That would also strengthen Harley’s partnership with Hero MotoCorp.
