The 2025 season of the Indian Racing League (IRL) officially began with a major milestone, the league’s first-ever Driver Draft, held at the prestigious Taj Lands End in Mumbai. This landmark event set a new standard in Indian motorsport, bringing together Franchise Owners, League Officials, and Media under one roof to shape the future of the upcoming season.
In a move aimed at increasing transparency, inclusivity and performance-based selection, the draft saw 24 drivers picked across six city-based teams. Each team selected four racers: one experienced international driver, one up-and-coming Indian or Indian-origin racer, one domestic Indian talent, and one female driver. This format ensures a balanced mix of global skill and homegrown potential.
The grid features some impressive names, including former F1 test driver and Le Mans winner Neel Jani, two-time IRL champion Raoul Hyman, and British GP2 ace Jon Lancaster. The Indian line-up includes rising stars like Ruhaan Alva, Sai Sanjay, Sohil Shah, and Akshay Bohra. Representing the female racers are Fabienne Wohlwend, Gabriela Jilkova, Caitlin Wood, and others with experience across W Series, GT, and F3.
The draft was followed by a press meet featuring team owners, several of whom are leading names from Indian cinema and sports. They took the stage to unveil their rosters and share insights into their vision for the league. According to the IRL, each roster was crafted using detailed data analysis, driver profiles, and regional alignment — underscoring the serious intent behind this new format.
The 2025 IRL season kicks off in August, with races set to be held on both permanent circuits and urban street tracks across India. Franchises like Speed Demons Delhi, Hyderabad Blackbirds, Goa Aces, Kolkata Royal Tigers, Kichcha’s Kings Bengaluru, and Chennai Turbo Riders are now ready for what promises to be the most competitive and fan-focused season yet.
