Maruti Suzuki Commissions First Green Hydrogen Plant at Manesar

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has commissioned its first green hydrogen plant at its Manesar facility in Haryana. The 300kW pilot electrolyser plant will produce green hydrogen, which it blends with natural gas and uses as process fuel in its manufacturing operations.

The initiative uses surplus solar energy generated during holidays to produce hydrogen, allowing Maruti Suzuki to store and utilise energy that would otherwise go unused. The company plans to scale up green hydrogen adoption across its Haryana and Gujarat manufacturing facilities based on the pilot’s learnings.

Green Hydrogen for Cleaner Manufacturing

The plant supports Maruti Suzuki’s broader strategy to diversify renewable energy sources for manufacturing. The company is also expanding solar power, biogas and battery energy storage to reduce its operational carbon footprint.

Maruti Suzuki aims to reduce its manufacturing carbon emissions from 615,000 tonnes to 266,000 tonnes by FY2030-31.

Expanding Its Renewable Energy Portfolio

Alongside the green hydrogen pilot, Maruti Suzuki is advancing several clean energy initiatives:

• A 10-tonne-per-day biogas plant at Kharkhoda, scheduled for commissioning in FY2026-27.
• A recently commissioned 1 MWh battery energy storage system at Kharkhoda.
• Integration of compressed biogas (CBG) as process fuel, with board approval for four CBG projects and an allocated budget of ₹561 crore.

Suzuki Motor Corporation is also partnering with the National Dairy Development Board and dairy industry unions to establish 10 biogas plants across India, three of which are already operational in Gujarat.
