Maruti Suzuki is set to unveil a new flex-fuel passenger vehicle on June 5, commemorating World Environment Day.
The announcement was made by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari during an event in Nagpur, where he revealed that the upcoming model will be capable of running on E100 fuel, or 100 percent ethanol.
Key Highlights
The Wagon R Flex Fuel becomes India’s first flex-fuel passenger vehicle, capable of running on ethanol blends ranging from E20 to E85.
Powered by Maruti Suzuki’s 1.2-litre K12N petrol engine with ethanol-compatible modifications, the model will initially be offered only to fleet operators and ride-hailing services, marking a significant step towards wider adoption of alternative fuels in India.
Minister Gadkari said flex-fuel vehicles are expected to become more common in the coming years as India works to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels.
The minister noted that India currently imports a large share of its petrol, diesel, and gas requirements, making alternative fuels such as ethanol an important part of the country’s long-term energy strategy.
Vehicles designed to run on higher ethanol blends require several modifications compared to regular petrol-powered models.
These typically include upgraded fuel lines, injectors, seals, and revised engine calibration to handle ethanol’s different chemical properties. Industry estimates suggest these upgrades could increase vehicle costs by around ₹40,000 to ₹50,000 initially.
E100 is pure ethanol fuel without any petrol mixed in. Ethanol offers a higher-octane rating than petrol but requires specially designed engines and fuel systems.
The Indian government has been steadily increasing ethanol adoption through programmes such as E20 fuel, and the upcoming Maruti launch could mark the next major step in that journey.
