Mercedes-Benz CLA (Electric): Clean, Smart, and Built for Real Use

 We spent time with the new Mercedes-Benz CLA, previewing what will soon become the brand’s entry-level electric sedan for global markets.

The EV avatar of the CLA is built on the brand’s MMA platform, and it signals a clear shift in how the German car maker approaches compact luxury EVs.

Performance Figures

The car is more about efficiency than speed.

• Acceleration: 0-100 kph in 6.7 seconds
• Power: 268 hp and 335 Nm of torque
• Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive (RWD) with a two-speed gearbox.

Range and Charging

This is where the CLA EV stands out.

• Up to 792 km (WLTP) expected range
• 800V system for faster charging
• Quick top-ups are possible on fast chargers

Driving Impressions

Based on our experience and what’s been showcased so far:

• Smooth, linear power delivery typical of EVs
• Low centre of gravity improves stability
• Tuned more for everyday usability than spirited driving

This model is not positioned as a performance-focused AMG-style product, at least in standard form.

Ride Quality

• Suspension handles rough patches well
• Stays comfortable over bad roads
• Cabin remains well insulated

Design and Looks

The CLA sticks to what works.

• Clean surfaces, no unnecessary lines

Easy to Live With

From what we experienced:

• Feels smaller from the driver’s seat
• Easy to place in traffic
• Not an intimidating purchase, even for new buyers

The Big Firsts

This CLA is more than just a new model. It introduces key changes for the brand.

• First model on the new MMA platform
• New-gen MBUX system with AI integration
• 800V electrical architecture for faster charging
• The car gets a frunk for the first time
• Option to choose Manufaktur colours, a first time for an entry-level Merc.

A Big Win

The new CLA EV won the European Car of the Year 2026.

Few Negatives

After a brief driving session of the model, we felt:

• Fewer tactile buttons and depending on screens while driving can cause distraction
• There is no traditional start/stop button. Once inside with the door closed, press the brake pedal to power up the car. Shift into Drive using the gear selector, and the car is ready to move.

This may come off as a convenient add-on, but the presence of the start/stop button was more reassuring than inconvenient.

Verdict

The CLA doesn’t stand out with huge figures, but is an easy-to-drive and an easy to understand EV.

We believe this particular model will sell well in the country, provided the car is priced right.

The prices have yet to be announced, and the final numbers will cement the brand’s EV approach in the country.
