Built to Last, Born to Evolve; 600,000 G-Classes and Counting

Mercedes-Benz has celebrated a major milestone as the 600,000 th G-Class rolled off the production line in Graz, Austria. The landmark vehicle is a G 580 with EQ Technology, finished in obsidian black metallic. This all-electric model highlights the G-Class’s evolution while staying true to its legendary off-road roots.

The G-Class, often called the “best off-road vehicle in the world,” has been in production since 1979. Its cult status comes from its unmistakable design and outstanding off-road capability. Over the years, Mercedes-Benz has released special and limited-edition G-Class models, including last year’s Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s, which paid tribute to the original W 460 series from the 1980s.

Personalization is a key part of the G-Class experience. Since 2019, the MANUFAKTUR program has allowed customers to choose from more than a million combinations to create a unique G-Class. Over 90 percent of buyers now select at least one MANUFAKTUR option, and since 2024, customers can pick from up to 20,000 paint colors, including heritage and exclusive shades.

The G-Class is one of Mercedes-Benz’s longest-running model series, alongside the S-Class and E-Class. When it launched in 1979, buyers could choose from four engine options and several body styles, including convertibles and station wagons with different wheelbases.

Over four decades, the G-Class has transformed from a rugged commercial vehicle to a luxury lifestyle icon, but it has always kept its distinctive character. Features like all-wheel drive, 100% locking differentials, and a robust ladder frame have been standard since the beginning. Iconic design elements—such as round headlights, the exposed spare wheel on the rear door, and the classic silhouette—ensure the G-Class remains instantly recognizable as a true heir to the original G-Model.
