Mitsubishi Motors North America has made history as the Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) were both named Green Car Journal’s 2026 Family Green Car of the Year. This is the first time in the award’s 21-year history that two sister models have shared the top honor. It’s also the fourth year in a row that the Outlander PHEV has won this award.
The Green Car Journal award recognizes vehicles that are environmentally friendly, stylish, and practical for families. The Outlander PHEV stood out for its upcoming upgrades, including a bigger battery for more electric range, new front and rear styling, a refreshed interior, better driving dynamics, and a new Yamaha audio system. The new Outlander mild-hybrid also helped Mitsubishi win, as it offers improved efficiency and lower emissions.
Ron Cogan, editor of Green Car Journal, said that adding a mild-hybrid to the Outlander is an important step for better efficiency and less carbon emissions. He also praised the Outlander PHEV’s new features and longer electric range.
Both the updated Outlander PHEV and the new mild-hybrid Outlander will launch soon. The current 2025 Outlander PHEV already offers 38 miles of all-electric range and up to 420 miles total range. Both models come with Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system for better handling in all conditions.
Mark Chaffin, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America, said he is proud that both Outlander models are being recognized together. He said these vehicles show Mitsubishi’s commitment to practical, eco-friendly mobility and that families now have more choices for green driving.
Mitsubishi plans to keep launching new or updated vehicles every year until 2030, focusing on sustainability and value for money.
