BMW X7 Review: The Benchmark for Three-Row Luxury SUVs

The BMW X7 continues to define the “Sports Activity Vehicle” (SAV) flagship category, serving as a technical and luxury showcase for the brand. For the 2025 model year, the X7 reinforces its position with a refined 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain lineup, a heavily digitized cabin, and the mechanical poise required to balance its significant curb weight.

Powertrain and Performance: Hybridized Precision

The 2025 BMW X7 lineup is characterized by the integration of 48V mild-hybrid technology across all engines, providing smoother start-stop transitions and an electrical boost for low-end acceleration. All models are paired with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

A two-axle air suspension with electronically controlled dampers is standard, allowing the vehicle to adjust its ride height by up to 80mm. This system is critical to the X7’s ride quality, as it actively compensates for road imperfections while maintaining body control during spirited driving.

Interior Architecture: The Digital Command Center

The cabin is dominated by the BMW Curved Display, a single glass surface housing a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display. Running on the latest BMW iDrive interface, the system features a simplified logic for faster access to frequently used functions.

  • Seating & Versatility: The X7 offers a standard seven-seat layout or an optional six-seat configuration with second-row captain’s chairs. All three rows feature electronic adjustment and dedicated climate zones.
  • Luxury Materials: Standard appointments include extended Merino leather, fine-wood trim, and glass applications on the gear selector and iDrive controller.
  • Cargo Space: The X7 provides usable space with the third row in place, which expands significantly via electronic folding switches located in the split-tailgate boot area.

Exterior Design and Road Presence

The 2025 X7 maintains a commanding aesthetic, highlighted by a split-headlight design and the optional illuminated kidney grille. The slim upper LED units house the daytime running lights and indicators, while the lower units contain the Matrix LED headlamps. Wheel sizes range from 21 inches up to an optional 23-inch light-alloy set—the largest ever offered on a BMW factory model.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The X7 features a comprehensive safety suite, including:

  • Driving Assistant Professional: Features Steering and Lane Control Assistant and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go.
  • Parking Assistant Professional: Includes a Reversing Assistant that can autonomously retrace the last 200 meters of a driven path.
  • Maneuver Assistant: Uses GPS and trajectory data to automate complex parking maneuvers in frequently visited locations.
