Rallying legend Maletira Jagat Nanjappa passes away at 68

Indian motorsport has lost one of its most accomplished rallying figures. Maletira Jagat Nanjappa passed away at the age of 68, leaving behind a career defined by championship victories, endurance, and an enduring passion for motorsport.

Hailing from Kodagu, Nanjappa was among India’s most successful motorcycle rallyists. He won the Indian National Rally Riders Championship nine times in the motorbike category between 1986 and 1996.

A career built on grit

Nanjappa’s rallying journey was also closely associated with his wife, Anita Nanjappa, who served as his navigator during his early years in the sport.

One incident, in particular, captured the determination that defined the couple. During a rally, the motorcycle suffered a flat rear tyre. Instead of retiring, they continued for nearly 70 kilometres, with Anita sitting on the petrol tank to reduce the load on the rear wheel.

From two wheels to off-road racing

After establishing himself as a dominant force in motorcycle rallying, Nanjappa went on to compete in four-wheel and off-road events.

His competitive success continued well beyond his motorcycle rallying days. In 2018, he partnered with co-driver Chetan Changappa to win the demanding Rainforest Challenge India in Goa.

His passing marks the end of an important chapter in Indian rallying, but his legacy, as a champion known for courage, endurance and an uncompromising love for motorsport, will remain.
