The Sportier OG GTI! Experiencing the Golf @ NATRAX

We has got a Chance to Test Drive the much anticipated Hot-Hatch, the Golf GTI in Indore, at the famous NATRAX automotive test track. It is known for its high-speed circuit with a steep 40 plus-degree banking, almost like driving in a NASCAR race. Even if you’re not a car enthusiast, you’ve probably heard of the Golf. And the GTI? That’s the sportier, performance-tuned version that’s been turning heads since the 1970s. The Mark 8.5 GTI, a refreshed version of the eighth generation, is now here in India. Let’s take a closer look.

Exterior Design: The new Golf GTI Mark 8.5 comes with a sleek, refreshed look. One of the standout features is the continuous red stripe across the front grille—a nod to the original GTI design. You’ll also notice the new illuminated Volkswagen logo, which adds a modern touch and could soon become standard on other VW models.

The front bumper features a honeycomb grille, though it can get messy on long drives—especially at high speeds, where insects tend to stick to it! The fog lamps have a unique X-shaped five-point design, which looks bold and futuristic. The bonnet has sharp creases that add character, and the overall shape looks aggressive yet refined.

On the sides, the car rides on 18-inch alloy wheels. There are several alloy designs available, but one of the standout ones is inspired by the classic “Monza” wheel, a fan favorite from the older Mark 5 GTI.

Interior: While the interior details weren’t deeply explored, we can expect the usual premium GTI finish—sporty seats, a digital cockpit, and intuitive controls. Volkswagen’s focus has always been on a driver-oriented layout with quality materials, and this new GTI is likely no different. Expect red stitching, GTI badging, and tech-forward features like a touchscreen infotainment system and customizable digital displays.

Driving Impression: Driving the GTI on the NATRAX high-speed track was a thrilling experience. The track’s steep banking really showed off the car’s stability, grip, and performance. Whether it’s acceleration, high-speed cornering, or braking, the GTI feels solid and confidence-inspiring. The GTI has always been known for its sharp handling and balanced ride, and the new Mark 8.5 stays true to that legacy.

Specifications:

  • Generation: Mark 8.5 (facelift of 8th-gen Golf GTI)
  • Engine: Expected to continue with a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine
  • Transmission: Likely a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox
  • Power: Around 245 hp (based on global spec)
  • Wheels: 18-inch alloys
  • Lighting: DRLs, X-shaped fog lamps, and illuminated VW badge
  • Design Highlights: Red GTI stripe, honeycomb grille, sporty stance

Flywheel’s Opinion: The Volkswagen Golf GTI Mark 8.5 continues the legacy of a hot hatch that’s as practical as it is fun to drive. With its updated styling, signature GTI elements, and performance upgrades, it’s a great mix of heritage and modernity. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-time driver, this new GTI has something to offer. If you’re looking for a car that delivers excitement every time you drive, the Golf GTI is hard to beat.
