Mercedes-AMG Updates GLE 53 Range: More Power, Hybrid Tech, Same AMG Feel

Mercedes-AMG has updated the GLE 53 lineup with sharper design, more tech, and a stronger push towards electrification. The range now includes both GLE 53 4MATIC+ and GLE 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+, available in SUV and Coupe body styles.

This update focuses on improving performance, efficiency, and everyday usability, without changing the core AMG character.

Design

The changes are clean and functional.

Up front, there’s a revised AMG grille, new air intakes, and updated LED lighting. At the rear, the new star-pattern tail-lamps stand out.

  • SUV: upright, practical design
  • Coupe: sloping roofline, more aggressive stance

The Coupe looks sportier, but the SUV remains the more usable option.

Engine and performance

Both versions use the updated 3.0-litre inline-six petrol engine.

GLE 53 4MATIC+ (48V mild hybrid)

  • 449 hp + 23 hp boost
  • 600 Nm (640 Nm overboost)
  • 0–100 km/h: 4.9 sec

This is the standard AMG setup. Strong performance, smooth delivery, and quick response thanks to the 48V system.

GLE 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ (Plug-in hybrid)

  • 585 hp combined
  • 750 Nm
  • 0–100 km/h: 4.5 sec

The hybrid adds a 184 hp electric motor. It improves low-end response and overall acceleration.

  • Electric-only top speed: 140 km/h
  • Electric range: up to 90 km

This makes it usable as a daily driver, while still offering full performance when needed.

Driving and tech

The focus here is balance.

  • Air suspension offers good comfort and control
  • An optional active anti-roll system improves handling
  • AWD system adapts torque based on conditions

Drive modes include Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Trail, and Individual.

The hybrid also gets:

  • Electric mode
  • Battery Hold mode

Interior

The cabin is typical AMG.

  • AMG performance steering wheel with physical controls
  • Nappa leather options
  • Digital display with performance data

It’s simple, premium, and driver-focused.

SUV vs Coupe

  • SUV: more space, more practical
  • Coupe: better styling, less rear headroom

No mechanical difference between the two.

Verdict

The updated GLE 53 range feels more complete than before. The standard GLE 53 4MATIC+ continues to offer strong, smooth performance with everyday usability, while the GLE 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ adds more power, better efficiency, and the ability to run on electric power for daily drives. The hybrid is the smarter pick for most buyers, but the standard version still holds its appeal for those who prefer a more traditional AMG experience. Whether you choose the SUV or the Coupe, the GLE 53 remains a well-rounded performance luxury SUV.
