The monsoon season brings welcome relief from the heat, but it also creates some of the most challenging driving conditions of the year. Wet roads, poor visibility, and reduced grip can quickly turn a routine drive into a risky one if you’re not prepared.
Here are a few simple tips to help you stay safe behind the wheel this rainy season.
Wet roads reduce tyre grip and increase braking distances. Drive at a lower speed than usual and leave a larger gap between your vehicle and the one ahead to allow more time to react.
Tyres are your car’s only contact with the road. Ensure they have sufficient tread depth and the correct tyre pressure. Worn-out tyres are more likely to lose grip and increase the risk of aquaplaning.
Turn on your headlights whenever visibility drops. This not only helps you see better but also makes your vehicle more visible to other road users. Avoid using high beams in heavy rain, as they can reflect off water droplets and reduce visibility.
Harsh braking, rapid acceleration and sharp steering movements can unsettle the vehicle on slippery roads. Drive smoothly and make gradual inputs to maintain control.
Water depth can be deceptive. Driving through deep water risks engine damage, electrical faults and even vehicle flotation. If you’re unsure about the depth, it’s best to wait or find an alternative route.
Replace worn wiper blades before the monsoon begins and ensure your washer fluid is topped up. After driving through standing water, lightly apply the brakes to help dry the discs and restore braking performance.
Safe monsoon driving isn’t about driving slowly everywhere; it’s about driving smart. A well-maintained vehicle, smooth driving inputs, and a little extra patience can go a long way in keeping you, your passengers, and other road users safe during the rainy season.
