Lamborghini LM002 Turns 40: The Super SUV That Started It All

Long before performance SUVs became the norm, Lamborghini built something that seemed impossible. In 1986, the Italian marque unveiled the LM002, a V12-powered off-roader that combined supercar performance with genuine off-road capability.

Four decades later, Lamborghini is celebrating the model that laid the foundation for today’s Super SUV segment.

The SUV Before SUVs Existed

The LM002 was revealed at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1986. At a time when luxury SUVs barely existed, Lamborghini created a machine capable of tackling deserts, rocky trails and highways with equal confidence.

Its roots can be traced back to a series of experimental projects, including the Cheetah, LM001 and LMA prototypes. Years of development and testing, particularly in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, eventually led to the production-ready LM002.

Countach Power Meets Off-road Capability

What made the LM002 truly special was its engine.

Borrowed from the legendary Countach Quattrovalvole, the 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V12 produced around 450 hp. Despite weighing more than 2.7 tonnes, the LM002 could reach a top speed of 210 km/h, making it one of the fastest off-road vehicles of its era.

Key Specifications:

  • 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine
  • Around 450 hp output
  • Five-speed ZF manual gearbox
  • Selectable four-wheel-drive system
  • Three locking differentials
  • Top speed of 210 km/h
  • Water wading depth of 82 cm
  • Production period: 1986-1992

Built to Conquer Any Terrain

The LM002 wasn’t just about straight-line speed.

It featured a reinforced tubular chassis, independent suspension and specially developed Pirelli Scorpion BK tyres. These tyres were engineered specifically for the LM002 and became famous for their ability to handle both high-speed road driving and demanding desert conditions.

Luxury with a Wild Side

Inside, the LM002 offered a level of luxury rarely seen in off-roaders of the period.

Leather upholstery, wood trim, air conditioning and even an optional television made it one of the most extravagant SUVs ever built. Lamborghini produced just 301 examples before ending production in 1992.

The Legacy Lives On

Today, the LM002 is widely regarded as the spiritual predecessor to the Urus. While the modern Urus has transformed Lamborghini’s fortunes, its DNA can be traced directly back to the LM002, the machine that proved a Lamborghini could thrive far beyond the racetrack.
