Tata Nexon AMT | First Drive Review

With more than 28,000 units of the Nexon out of showrooms in just six months, it’s a fine move from Tata Motors bringing the AMT version of the radical-looking Compact SUV. Nexon HyprDrive SSG, where SSG stands for self-shifting gears comes both in Petrol and Diesel versions and sure it has an AMT equalled to conventional Autos out there. With a new fiery orange shade with grey accents instead of the white ones the slight awkwardness at the rear is completely gone. Though it looks compact outside, the Visual appeal and abundance of space inside sure helped the Nexon stand apart from the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Ford Eco Sport.

The AMT variant too comes with the four cylinder 1.5-litre diesel and three cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engines that offer 110PS along with 260Nm and 170Nm of torque respectively. Both are mated to an all-new, six-speed AMT gearbox. Tata claims that the Nexon AMT is the first car in India to offer driving modes along with an AMT unit. We found the ‘Creep’ function very helpful in the city traffic. The smart hill assist that keeps the car from rolling back when it begins to move on a slope too is a driver’s delight. Plus, there is an intelligent transmission controller which offers features such as anti-stall, kick-down and fast-off.

Step hard on the gas pedal and the Nexon AMT will take off with a slight judder, a characteristic trait of most automated manual transmissions. The slight lag in the gear change is also justifiable since AMT’s are still a relatively new technology. Both engines feels equally refined but the Diesel feels like most accustomed to the transmission. The drive modes tailors the experience well and gets you the power the way you want. The manual mode is very engaging as the lag between gear changes is very minimal. Overall the AMT makes for a quite relaxed driving.

With less than 4 metres the Nexon AMT is a very convenient city car with it’s distinctive looks and features. The attention to details is remarkable and Tata has taken a lot of inputs from the real world issues. The bookings are open at Rs 11,000.
