BMW Unveils Fifth-Generation X5 With Electric, Hydrogen and Plug-In Hybrid Powertrains

BMW has pulled the wraps off the all-new fifth-generation X5, marking the biggest evolution of its luxury SUV since the original model debuted in 1999. Built around BMW’s Neue Klasse technology, the new X5 will be offered with five different powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, fully electric and, for the first time, hydrogen fuel-cell power.

The new X5 is set to go on sale globally from late 2026.

Five Powertrains, One SUV

The biggest talking point is the wide choice of powertrains.

Available options include:

  • Petrol mild-hybrid
  • Diesel mild-hybrid
  • Plug-in hybrid
  • Fully electric BMW iX5
  • Hydrogen-powered BMW iX5 Hydrogen

The all-electric iX5 uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology with an 845km claimed range, 800V architecture and bidirectional charging capability.

Meanwhile, the hydrogen-powered iX5 promises a claimed driving range of up to 750km, making it BMW’s first production hydrogen vehicle.

Fresh Neue Klasse Design

The new X5 adopts BMW’s latest Neue Klasse design language while retaining its familiar SUV proportions.

Exterior highlights:

  • Illuminated kidney grille
  • New ‘Double-X’ LED lighting signature
  • Flush electric door handles
  • Up to 23-inch alloy wheels
  • New M Sport and M Performance packages

BMW says the cleaner design improves both aerodynamics and road presence.

High-Tech Cabin

Inside, the X5 receives a complete overhaul with BMW’s latest digital technology.

Key features include:

  • Panoramic iDrive display
  • BMW Operating System X
  • Full-width Panoramic Vision display
  • Optional passenger display
  • 3D head-up display
  • Ambient lighting
  • Slate and glass interior trim

BMW has also introduced a new multifunction steering wheel and an updated digital interface inspired by the Neue Klasse concept cars.

Better Performance and Safety

The X5 continues to focus on driving dynamics while improving comfort.

Performance figures include:

  • 578 hp
  • 805 Nm Torque
  • 0-100 kmph – 4.6 seconds
  • Top speed – 210 kmph (electronically limited)

Adaptive suspension comes as standard, while higher variants offer Adaptive Chassis Control Professional with active roll stabilisation. BMW has also upgraded its Level 2 driver assistance systems and introduced new software features such as Soft-Stop technology on the electric models.

Final Take

The new X5 takes a huge leap forward in terms of technology and powertrain options, but the design may divide opinion. While the previous-generation X5 struck a near-perfect balance between elegance and aggression, the new model adopts a cleaner Neue Klasse-inspired look that feels less distinctive. It still has plenty going for it, but visually, the previous X5 arguably had stronger road presence and a more timeless appeal.
