VinFast VF MPV First Drive: A Practical 7-Seater EV Built for Families

The new 7-seater MPV from VinFast, based on the VF7, and it’s expected to come to India soon. The idea is simple, a practical, family-focused electric vehicle in a segment that Indians already love.

First impressions

At first glance, it clearly carries VinFast’s design identity.

  • Signature “V” lighting at the front
  • MPV-style upright shape for space
  • Large wheels (around 18–19 inches expected)
  • Long roofline and big glass area

From the side and rear, it feels more like a proper family MPV than a sporty SUV.

Interior: Simple but functional

Inside, the layout is very clean and minimal.

  • Single central screen controls almost everything
  • No separate instrument-cluster
  • Flat-bottom steering wheel
  • Wireless charging and cupholders
  • Mix of materials (soft touch + hard plastics)

It feels more focused on usability than luxury.

One thing to note: no sunroof here, and it’s unclear if Indian models will get one.

Space and practicality

This is where the car makes the most sense.

  • Spacious front and second row
  • Second row gets decent legroom but average thigh support
  • The third row is usable, but better for short trips or kids
  • Boot space expands significantly when the seats are folded
  • 500 litres with the third row down
  • 1500 litres with more seats folded

So overall, it works well as a proper family mover.

How it drives

This was a test track drive, so not real-world conditions, but here’s what stood out:

  • Feels soft and comfort-oriented
  • Good straight-line stability
  • Steering is light and easy
  • Braking felt strong
  • Some body roll (expected for an MPV)

In simple terms, it drives like a typical family MPV.

Battery and Performance

  • Around 60 kWh battery
  • Claimed 500+ km range
  • Around 280 Nm torque
  • Around 201 hp
  • Top speed 160 km/h (test conditions)
  • Performance feels adequate, not aggressive, which suits its purpose.

Small things we noticed

  • Everything is controlled via the main screen, even mirrors
  • Soft seats are comfortable, but may get tiring on long drives
  • Slight steering play during quick direction changes
  • Some jerkiness under sudden acceleration

Safety and features

  • Strong safety focus expected
  • Emergency braking alerts and warning systems are present
  • Sudden braking triggers hazard lights automatically
  • It’s still early, but safety seems well covered.

Verdict

The VinFast VF MPV feels like a proper family EV, simple, spacious and comfort-focused. It’s not trying to be sporty, and that’s fine.

If priced well in India, this could work because:

  • Indians like 7-seaters
  • EV demand is growing
  • Practicality is strong

Right now, it’s a promising first impression; the real test will be pricing and how it feels on Indian roads.
